The delegate of Citizen Participation of the National Police of Avilés, Alberto Vior, offered a talk addressed to parents in which he warned of the risks that minors have for an inappropriate use of Internet and social networks.

Children increasingly use the Internet and social networks in all kinds of devices, a reality to which many parents are not adapted and in which, sometimes without knowing it, they play a very important role. To inform the parents of our students of these situations and clarify any doubts that may arise, the College organized on the afternoon of Tuesday 22 May a talk about Internet risks. The conference was given by the delegate of Citizen Participation of the National Police of Avilés, Alberto Vior, who warned that the crimes related to the use of the Network by the minors "are shooting up".

As he explained, children are using social networks more and more so as not to be separated from their circle of friends, who also use them. This opens a new virtual space that is used by some people to capture children and young people and take advantage of them. "We think that children are safe when they do not leave home, but what we do not know is what they do in their social networks, they have a supercontrolled way of avoiding parental surveillance, they know all the tricks, so we have to put the batteries, "stressed Vior.

Sometimes we forget that social networks are companies that, as such, seek to obtain benefits that they achieve through the contents that users put on their platforms. "Everything happens to be owned by them, photos, videos ...", explained the agent, including the contents that the minors contribute. Currently, the minimum age to create a profile on these social networks is 14 years (the minimum age provided by law to provide data without parental authorization), although it will be uploaded to 16. However, minors falsify their age, create false profiles and continue to expose themselves to dangers such as 'grooming', which consists of blackmail to get photos or information compromised of minors and, even, stay with them and subject them to abuse. "Children are easy to deceive, these people come to them through false profiles, pretending to be young people of their age, and they get information from them until they reach their goals, which is why it is very important not to accept as contacts people who do not know in person, or give information to strangers, "said Alberto Vior.

The agent stressed the important role that parents play in preventing these situations. "It is not that you can see your children's telephone, it is that you have to do it", he underlined the parents present at the talk. Also, reviewed the articles included in the Criminal Code that involve the commission of crimes for inappropriate use of the Internet: disseminate images committed by a person (aggravating if it is a minor), send images of sexual content to minors or share this type of images when they are carried out by minors, insulting, vexing, threatening ... If these crimes are committed by minors, the Penal Law of the Minor is applied, but the responsibility is of the parents, who must respond and face to the penalties and fines that are derived from these behaviors. "Sometimes, in cases of repeated crimes, it has come to take away custody of parents," said Vior.

The representative of the Police recommended to be alert to the stalking of hackers taking some precautions, such as creating strong passwords (using numbers and letters, combining uppercase and lowercase letters, etc.), not providing personal data, eliminating from the contact list those who do not is known personally, not accept invitations from strangers, keep in mind that any step taken on the internet leaves a trace ... It all comes down to one sentence: "do not do on the internet what you would not do in the real world". And, especially in the face of the youngest, if you fall into blackmail or abuse by someone, tell the parents immediately and inform the police. Because, as Alberto Vior emphasized, "we stop all these people, everything leaves a trace".
