The 'blue tide' wins in almost all categories and tops the podiums of the zone of the Team Chess Sports Games.

19 teams from the 5 age categories met on Sunday, March 27 at the Santo Tomás de Avilés school to compete for places in the final of the Principality Sports Games. The school San Fernando, the one that has presented the most teams by far, has won in almost all categories. Four gold medals, two silver and two bronze was the harvest of our athletes.

The first victory of the 'blue tide' came from the hands of the smallest. The sub-8 played a Scheveningen system (in which all the components of a team face each other one by one) against Santo Tomás. The Sanfer chess players dominated the competition and came out winners in all the individual sets. Rafael Serrano, Laura Peláez, Yuchen Zou and Biel Peláez were the members of the winning team.

In the sub-10 the surprise jumped and Santo Tomás prevailed over Sanfer A, a priori more experienced. Sanfer A: Luis Ávila, Alvaro Díaz de la Noval, Alicia Arribas and Yago Mira had to settle for silver and Sanfer C, made up of Pedro Gulley, Ramón Linares, Pablo Iglesias and Daniel Santos, finally won bronze.

There was also a surprise in the under-12 category, as the Sanfer D, made up of first-year players, beat the seniors in an exciting 6-round Swiss system. Nico Abellán, Gunnar Villanueva, Jorge Fernández, Álvaro Ribera, Saúl López and Lucas Menéndez were the actors of this small feat. The favourites, from Sanfer A, Rubén Zaragoza, Alex Labra, Pelayo Blanco, Bruno Gómez and Daniel de Resurrección, did not let the silver slip away and Sanfer C (Efrén Peláez, Alex Bartsch, David Martínez, Jorge Cabo and Rodrigo López) won with the bronze by beating Sanfer B.

The sub14 and sub16 categories came together due to the lack of teams and played a double-round league between the 3 participating teams. The U-16 Sanfer, which fielded Pelayo Sánchez, Lucas Alonso, Pelayo Blanco, Alex Labra, Rubén Zaragoza, Álvaro Ribera and Ángel Oliver. He got the absolute victory, and that the majority of his players belong to younger categories. A legendary Sanfer squad, made up of Rodrigo Martino, Sara Zapatero, Claudia Arribas and Daniela Bernardo, who have achieved great successes for the Avilesian school, came in second place, although they won the gold medal for the best under-14.

All the champion teams will represent the Avilés area in the final of the Sports Games that will take place in Oviedo next Sunday. Good luck everyone!
