Retrieving big names of women

Equally brilliant, influential, determinants in their different areas ... but historically obscured in front of their male colleagues. Highlighting the important role of women on all fronts has been the goal of an activity launched in the different departments of ESO and Bachillerato. The students have researched about female names that have left and continue to make their mark in each branch of knowledge, a work that has been embodied in murals and work done in the classroom. This is an initiative promoted on the occasion of the March 8, International Women's Day, which reaffirms the importance of women in all areas.

From Clara Schumann to Amy Winehouse, from the Brontë sisters to JK Rowling, from Hypatia of Alexandria to Jane Goodall, from Marie Curie to Margarita Salas, from María Zambrano to Simone de Beauvoir ... Hundreds of names emerged from this collective work, in opposed to the few public recognitions reached by the majority of them. An evident reality that has been worked in the classrooms as a way of raising awareness among young people in pursuit of equality.

Thus, in the subject of Music, students have searched for the names of great composers and interpreters of different genres that they have collected in a large mural. In the same way, in the subject of Philosophy they have searched for the names of great thinkers, most of them very unknown, obscured in some cases by the figures of their husbands. In History, they have proposed a game by composing a mural in which the viewer has to relate certain dates with historical facts related to female characters or milestones in the conquest of equality by women. In Plastic, Visual and Audiovisual Education, the students have discovered the designers that were part of the Bauhaus, one of the most decisive movements in the world of Design and Architecture, and in which they worked with their typefaces. The initiative to recover the big names of women was extended to the rest of subjects, such as Sciences and Literature.

Framed in this date another activity impelled from the Department of Orientation took place. Her head of studies, Mónica Rodríguez Corominas, gave a talk to ESO's 1º students in which she addressed the changes that come with adolescence, both on a psychological and emotional and physical level. One way that young people are aware of the transformations they are already experiencing, that they understand them and that this knowledge allows them to manage them in a balanced way. Processes that, with their differences, affect both them and them.

The activities for Women's Day also extended to other levels. Thus, in Early Childhood Education, the children of 2 years enjoyed a story dedicated to the artist Frida Kahlo.
